“Nothing can be saved.”
Poland under German occupation. Tragically affected by war, Michał joins the partisans. Soon, he finds himself in a flat where a woman is giving birth, and learns that her husband is being held prisoner by the Germans. Michał decides to look after the woman and her child, and rescue her husband from the occupier.
The Apocalypse of John was not only the inspiration for the title – quotes from the Book of Revelation serve as the movie’s framing device, setting its emotional tone. “The Third Part of the Night” is uncompromising in its form, as is the Polish director’s whole filmography. The distinguishing features of the entirety of Żuławski’s artistic work can be found here, from people pushed over the edge and acting delirious, to the lively, expressive camera work. Żuławski himself classified the movie as mystical. In turn, one of the Polish critics noted that the picture brings to mind Ingmar Bergman and Luis Bunuel – the former by the way women are portrayed, and the latter owing to its “daring expression.” Even more qualities of great cinema can be found in the movie.
