When the groundhog loses patience
A group of friends goes to a cabin in the woods for the weekend. They while away the evening with dancing, nonsense, games and alcohol. Not all of them will remember the trip favourably though. Alba – the absent-minded, immature, self-absorbed main protagonist faces reality and adulthood in the gaps between beers. Her boyfriend breaks up with her as he cannot see any future in their relationship, and two of her friends tell her that they are moving abroad. This comes as a huge shock to her – she does not want anybody to ruin her carefree image of life. Something extraordinary happens during her furious walk through nearby ruins – the world stops for a few seconds. A moment later, Alba wakes up in the car with her friends, going to the cabin in the woods to spend the weekend. She is trapped in a time loop which makes her biggest dream come true – an endless party. But will her body endure this? Will she learn anything about life when she realizes that each repeated day is shorter?
“The Incredible Shrinking Wknd” is a touching story about the overestimation of life, adulthood and the elusiveness of the moment. In his full-length film, Jon Mikel Caballero draws from “Groundhog Day”. Even though there are many films based on this theme, the director finds a way to make it fresh. It is not the first time that the groundhog has taught a lesson to the miserable and rebellious. This case is difficult, and the lessons are being sped up. Alba has to participate in a race against the clock.
