Louise and Michael are siblings who return to their family home on the farm after many years. The reason for the meeting, however, is not pleasant: the ailing father will soon take his last breath. Children want to accompany him in his last moments and help their tired and devastated mother. The old woman is barely holding on, but her condition is fully understandable. At least for a little while. The woman mutilates herself shortly after the children arrive, and then commits suicide. Louise and Michael try to find out the truth about the dark events taking place in their family home. Are they visions of a tired mind or the presence of dark forces? And are they ready to accept the answers and face them?
Bryan Bertino, who stands behind the camera, offers us an atmospheric, raw and surprising cinema. The director eagerly reaches for the well-known and characteristic for the genre tricks in order to hit into our comfort zone more than once. Nightmare mixes with reality, reality does not work as it should, and the ailing father decided to stretch his bones, hanging from the ceiling. “Whisper and Darkness” is a slow horror film immersed in gloomy colors and an atmosphere of escalating ambiguity. Bertino doses surprise, layers questions and meticulously cares about the atmosphere, all with a clear nod towards the exorcism cinema.
