Marzena and Janek are a young married couple. Despite the short length of their relationship, they are experiencing their first major crisis. In their relationship, communication is not working, trust is lacking and suppressed anger begin to eat Marzena and Janek up from the inside. The rescue for the diminishing love flame is unconventional therapy for couples. In a small village hidden somewhere among forests and lakes lives a charismatic specialist in marital disputes. Rough and decisive guy decides to rescue their relationship and reheat their love. His methods of treatment are not standard. There is no comfortable cot, relaxing music or a box of handkerchiefs. Simple breathing and movement exercises begin to bring unexpected effects. The reality surrounding the characters begins to collapse. Have they just been brainwashed, therapy got out of hand or were their problems bigger than you might have imagined?
The full-length debut of the talented Piotr Dylewski is a brilliant and surprising story about the marital crisis. This simple story in the hands of a young director slowly transforms into an immersive and disturbing thriller. Production is leading us by the nose and… dragging by the ears. Questions and uncertainty build up. Dylewski keeps us in suspense until the very end. After the final series of twists and turns, we may need a therapeutic session, somewhere by the quiet lake.
“Rotten Ears” received a screenplay award during the 38th Koszalin Debut Films Festival as well as the award in the category “Off-cinema: Best Storyline” during Solanin Film Festival. The biggest recognition, however, is the award for Best Feature Film at the 68th Columbus International Film Festival in the United States.
