SCREW MACHINING OR A VERY SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE

horror, romance / Poland / 2001 / 33 min

Love, my dear, can overcome anything, even death

For all those who love playing with violence and watching streams of blood gushing everywhere, and for those who enjoy humor à la early Peter Jackson, “Screw machining” is a must-watch. This amateur gore horror with a budget of 200 PLN is, according to its creators, the first Polish production of this kind. It’s a story of a man, who is a strict father and a mafioso. Using a kitchen robot, he cuts off his daughter Ewa’s boyfriend’s genitals. As you might have guessed, the girl is miserable. With time, however, Ewa ends up with another man. A student of a secondary technical school of mechanical engineering who absolutely loves all things dead, innovational technologies, and “The Bride of Frankenstein”.

“Screw machining,” as written by one of the viewers on YouTube, Krzeczkowski, is a “perfect combination of romance and vulgar primitivism.” The production of a group of amateur filmmakers from Bydgoszcz (where the movie was shot) is purposely trashy, heavy, and unpleasant, which is a great upside, considering it’s a gore horror. All the bloody special effects were amateur-made, and you can clearly see the whole 200 PLN in there. The creators sure had some great ideas regarding scenography. For example, a hand puppet peeking shyly from behind a plate, during the completely irrational dinner scene accompanied by an old, worn-off recording of “Pocałuj mnie mój kochany,” a Polish festive song. There is also the prom party, where all the characters had light cast onto them from beneath, like in all classic horror movies. Those are just two examples of the young filmmakers’ creativity. It’s worth noting that the directors of “Screw machining,” much like Quentin Tarantino, meticulously chose the soundtrack in order for it to best reflect the plot.
