To the uninitiated, the word “wrestling” may bring to mind thoughts of masked fighters, skin-tight suits not much more covering than Borat’s bikini, or a myriad of spectacular throws, wrests and jumps. However, these distinctive spectacles are much more than simple entertainment. Passion, sacrifice and dreams are behind them. This is precisely one of such stories! Meet Vampiro – the legend of Mexican wrestling, a punk rock warrior, a teenager’s idol, and a loving father.
“Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro” is a fascinating documentary which tells the story of an extraordinary star and an exceptional man. Ian “Vampiro” Hodgkinson talks about his beginning on the ring as well as lights and shadows of his career. He takes us behind the scenes of the biggest wrestling events and discusses his private life, dreams, weaknesses and greatest love. This scary-looking guy is actually a big-hearted man, completely dedicated to this passion. The passion that destroys him more and more with each passing day.
The documentary is enriched with archival materials and interviews, as well as statements from wrestlers and people with ties to the industry. Apart from Vampiro himself, we get to know the history of wresting and the cultural phenomenon it has become in Mexico.
