“Isn’t it the ultimate irony that the man carries his enemy within even to the stars in the sky?”
A team of astronauts settles on a distant planet. After some time has passed and all of the original settlers have died, their descendants establish a primitive culture with its own beliefs and myths. One day, the planet is visited by a man who will soon play a very important role in the life of the whole tribe.
“On the Silver Globe” is an adaptation of the Lunar Trilogy by Jerzy Żuławski, Andrzej’s great-uncle. It is a daring movie that does not have any counterparts in Polish cinema. The project was almost left unfinished. Although the filming began in 1976, it was stopped a year later by order of the then Vice-minister of Culture and Art. Żuławski was eventually forced to leave the country under the threat of trial for wasting public money. He regained the chance to complete the project a decade later. Fortunately, we can now admire the final effect on-screen. An American movie critic wrote that “On the Silver Globe” is more fantastic than anything George Lucas could ever imagine. One example of the movie’s uniqueness is the idea of the cinematographer, Andrzej Jaroszewicz, who used different lenses to show the perspectives of each protagonist. And this is not the only interesting curiosity that the movie has to offer.
