Possession in the XXI century
An atmospheric, disturbing drama that surprisingly intertwines elements of fairy tales and horror. An intimate, minimalist film – awarded with an invitation to Un Certain Regard – it impresses with its cast – starring Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Prometheus, Unlocked). The Icelandic director’s debut is et on a lonely farm, where a young couple looks after a herd of sheep. Their harsh, work-filled lives change rapidly when an extraordinary creature is born in the pen. María and Ingvar take her home, and their decision to take care of the newborn is accompanied by the anger and despair of the sheep’s mother’s bleating. The growing tension is exacerbated by the arrival of Ingvar’s brother – a lost musician who always has empty pockets and brings only trouble. Director Valdimar Jóhannsson (a graduate of Sarajevo’s Film Factory) slowly pulls back the curtains of secrecy. He spins his story around the intersection of the human and the non-human, asking questions about our complex relationship with nature.
