Heidi Moore’s masterpiece, inspired by the oeuvre of incorrigible counterculture icon – John Waters, is a sequel of the cult film popular among certain social groups, “Dolly Deadly”, which also came out of Troma, the famous film production company. This studio is the reason behind dozens of C-grade cinema gems, including some of which – such as “The Toxic Avenger” – forced their way into the mainstream.
The question is whether the story of-serial slasher dragqueen Slasherella will repeat this feat. Probably not. “Kill Dolly Kill” is a politically incorrect and gruesome film that is filled with really horrible (but catchy!) songs. After all, it’s not just a horror and black comedy, but also a musical. But above all, “Kill Dolly Kill” is an innovative masterpiece that speaks up for people who cannot speak out. Slasherella is on a mission to silence both the bigots and the homophobes. In other words, those who forced drag in the US to go underground. The story of her bloody crusade in defence of the oppressed is not something sophisticated, but that is the whole point. “Dolly” got the green light from Lloyd Kaufman himself, who, as he has a habit for, makes a cameo appearance in this film. Don’t expect a cosy and colourful screening, one after which you can discuss patriarchy and whether the world is really run by men with the help of horses. “Kill Dolly Kill” brims with contagious rage.
