Before the Internet was invented only your family knew you were a psychopath
Kurt is a young and disturbingly narcissistic boy who dreams of a great career. This time it is not about the love for singing, dancing or figure skating. A millennial who is a bit overwhelmed with life simply wants online popularity: lots of reactions, loyal followers and comments full of admiration. Unfortunately, the boy feels uncomfortable with modern trends. Kurt gets a job as a driver in the Spree app and then equips his car with cameras that track his every move. Conversations with passengers, however, do not bring the expected results. Viewership statistics do not improve, popularity bars do not increase, and Kurt does not become an Internet star overnight. However, the boy is ambitious and has no intention of giving up, he will reach his dream by any means necessary. He gets his way at any price. The fanatical urge to go viral makes Kurt decide to stream brutal murders.
“Influencer” is a brilliant blend of a black comedy and the bloody slasher of the social media age. Eugene Kotlyarenko plays with the film form by creating a production entirely made of authentic-looking materials from telephones, CCTV cameras and posts uploaded on social media. In “Influencer” the director also addresses the issue of numerous social problems: technology addiction, Internet exhibitionism, determining your self-esteem through the number of followers, and loss of contact with the reality. The whole thing is perfectly complemented by the charismatic Joe Keery’s role (“Stranger Things”), who easily balances between being a desperate loser and a sadistic psychopath.
On the screen we also see David Arquette known for the famous series of films “Scream”.
