Jill and Lisa are mothers, wives and ladies of the house. They live in a picturesque and colourful suburb. Just like other American guardians of the home they have some problems, crises and failures. Both women, despite their friendship, secretly compete with each other and try to prove that it is their life that is happier and more ideal. That’s fine, but inside this plastic, ridiculous and worrying parody of suburban life nothing is ordinary. Mothers trade children with each other or raise stolen soccer balls, kids turn into dogs and the host praises the taste of the water from a pool. For the residents of this lovely, pastel loony bin it is a typical day. They live a peaceful life and enjoy every day…that is, until family problems finally get out of hand. But how do we know that something is wrong when everything there is so quirky?
“Greener Grass” is a production that is strange and ridiculous to the very limit – it shows life in a colourful, surreal and plastic estate where nothing makes sense. What happens to the characters is a series of comic and nonsensical sketches which make you feel speechless and at a loss for words. The directing duo of DeBoer and Luebbe, whom we will see on screen, have created a harsh, quirky, unconventional, peculiar and absurd satire of American suburban life. If most of the films shown during the Splat! Festival require nerves of steel…we have absolutely no idea what this film requires from you. You must take personal responsibility for watching it. But since you are here, let’s stop for a while and smell the plastic flowers. Life can be so beautiful.
