A HYBRID GENRE OF SIXTEENSHORT STORIES WITH A FEMINIST TINGE

This hybrid genre was made last year as a swift response to the high-profile overturning of the Roe vs. Wade ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States. As a result of this decision, a question mark hung over the legality of abortion in the USA. “GIVE ME AN A” is an anthology of 16 short film stories, all of which depict the world we would not wish to live in, one in which the women’s right to decide on their own bodies is history. Both men and women sign an agreement before one night stand on the custody of their possible future child, abortion is prosecuted in the same degree as murder, whereas for having a miscarriage one can be sent to prison. While some of the stories in this anthology are hilarious – such as the one about a “Love Island”-style reality show in which a culprit of pregnancy is discovered through a process of elimination – the majority of them evoke distress. The actress and director Natasha Halevi, who is well-known to Troma fans, is the one behind putting all these stories together as well as bringing together a group of female directors and producing GIVE ME AN A within just three months.

The producing team includes actress and activist Alyssa Milano, “Candyman” star Virginia Madsen and actress Gina Torres, among others. In addition, we get to see Sean Gunn on screen as well as something that ties together this bouquet of stories, the cheerleading sequences, which are becoming gradually less cheerful, but more listless and hopeless with each story. In short, this film is an important response to the abortion debate, which, for a change, reflects the female perspective.
