CICADA: I WAS A TEENAGE HORROR MOVIE
comedy / USA / 1 h 3 min
Little cash, lots of love for cinema
In 1997, the Troisi brothers made a home-camera horror film about vampires. After a quarter of a century, they finally edited it, annotating it with hilarious comments and the necessary stage directions. And so out of amateur horror cinema came a cinematic giggle, the lines of which are sure to become iconic among audiences. The title refers to the classics of the genre: “I Was a Teenage Monster,” “I was a Teenage Warewolf,” or “I Was a Teenage Zombie.”
“Cicada: I Was a Teenage Horror!” is an extremely multi-themed tale of bloodsuckers, a work that flips the rules of horror cinema upside down. After the screening, you will long for your childhood, the times when friendships were the most enduring, and everything seemed possible – even filming a blockbuster that will make Hollywood stars out of pubescent kids. Every inch of “Cicada: I Was a Teenage Horror!” emanates a love of cinema and the enthusiasm of avid filmgoers. They are not hampered by a slim budget or a shortage of actors in writing new pages of cinema history. That is why the Troisi brothers, their friends, and family members play numerous characters, the vacuum cleaner pipe is an important, most high-tech set piece, and the seriousness of the underage actors will make you cry with laughter. The ingenious special effects, costumes, and makeup are simply disarming. It is a sentimental journey for all those who made great films with their friends after school. It’s a funny postcard from the 1990s when the imagination of teenage film fans was nourished by horror films secretly brought in from VHS cassette rentals. It’s also a portrait of young film fans themselves: determined to conquer the world, convinced that their vision is a masterpiece. “Cicada: I Was a Teenage Horror!” is a gourmet horror comedy made with love and devotion. Interestingly, the Troisi brothers – Keil and Aaron – have made numerous amateur productions, and years later turned a simple pastime into a profession (including co-writing the well-reviewed horror film “Human Resources”).
